Syrup of Ipecac
- Syrup of ipecac is rarely recommended for accidental poisonings.
- Activated Charcoal is now considered more important than syrup of ipecac in the treatment of accidental poisonings.
Carolinas Poison Center urges parents to keep a bottle of activated charcoal in the home for each child.
- Syrup of ipecac causes vomiting and SHOULD NEVER BE USED UNLESS INSTRUCTED TO DO SO BY Carolinas Poison Center OR PHYSICIAN.
- Some substances should not be brought back up, in these cases vomiting can do more harm than good (examples: kerosene, gasoline, drain cleaners).
- NEVER give salt water or mustard water. Also, sticking your finger down the throat can be very harmful and may damage the back of the throat.
- NEVER wait until symptoms show up after an ingestion or incident with poisonous substances to call Carolinas Poison Center. If you suspect that a poisoning has occurred, call immediately.
- ALWAYS CALL Carolinas Poison Center for advice and instructions as soon as possible after the poisoning happens.
- Syrup of ipecac may be recommended in rare cases so it is a good idea to keep a single bottle in the home if you have children.
