Most snakes are nonvenomous and not aggressive unless threatened. Nonpoisonous snakes have round heads and round eyes.

How can I identify these snakes?
The pit vipers (copperheads, cottonmouths and rattlesnakes) have triangular shaped heads, elliptical pupils, fangs, and pits between the nose and eyes. Coral snakes can be identified by colorful red, yellow and black bands; the red bands and black bands are separated by yellow bands.
