INSECT BITES AND STINGS

Brown Recluse

  • The brown recluse spider is small, about one-half inch long with an oval body and a dark violin-shaped marking on its back.
  • Its bite causes pain, redness, tenderness and a bull's eye appearance, which progresses to ulceration.
  • Bites may go unnoticed until a lesion develops.
  • If bitten wash the area with warm, soapy water and call Carolinas Poison Center immediately.
  • A tetanus booster shot may be needed after a bite from a brown recluse spider.
