A new report shows that some children's jewelry has toxic levels of a chemical called cadmium. Cadmium is more toxic than lead and was used in the production of some children's jewelry made in China. Wal-Mart has pulled suspect products from its shelves in response to the report.
The chemical does not get absorbed through the skin, so jewelry and other trinkets containing cadmium are not harmful when worn. However, if children taste, chew, or swallow an item with cadmium, they can be at risk for poisoning.
If you think your child has ingested an item containing cadmium:
call the Carolinas Poison Center at 1-800-222-1222.
return the item to the place of purchase.
