Poison Specialists The Specialists in Poison Information (SPIs) and Poison Information Providers (PIPs) of the Carolinas Poison Center answer the phones at the poison center. All of our SPIs are registered nurses intensively trained in toxicology. They are required to pass a rigorous national certification exam administered by the American Association of Poison Control Centers. Currently, there are 21 SPIs and 2 PIPs serving the residents of North Carolina.

The toxicologists and pharmacists of the Carolinas Poison Center provide clinical supervision and back-up support for the Specialists. They are available 24 hours a day for consultations with healthcare providers and are responsible for delivering continuing education courses to staff and other healthcare professionals. Administrators and Educators The Carolinas Poison Center administration and education staff ensure that the poison center is running smoothly and efficiently 365 days a year. The public education staff creates poison prevention education materials for diverse audiences and provides educational programs for other healthcare providers and educators.
