Hydrocarbons

  • Kerosene, gasoline and certain oils
  • Present in lamp oil, paint thinner and furniture polish
  • Can cause burns if left on the skin
  • Irritating to the stomach, causing nausea and vomiting
  • If a child chokes on a hydrocarbon, it can be drawn into lungs causing a chemical pneumonia which is potentially life threatening.
  • If incorrect contact has occured wash skin, do not induce vomiting, and do not give food or drink for at least 30 minutes.
