Mercury
- Elemental mercury is usually found in thermometers, barometers, electrical switches, clock pendulums, fluorescent lights, high density light bulbs, and some toys.
- Spilled mercury is difficult to find and clean because it separates into tiny beads. Use a flashlight by holding it close to the floor to find all of the particles.
- Elemental mercury is not harmful in accidental ingestions or dermal exposures but dangerous when vaporized or beaten into the air.
- Do NOT use a vacuum cleaner to clean up the mercury. If a vacuum is used, Carolinas Poison Center recommends you discard the vacuum cleaner.
- Sweep up with a broom or use duct tape to pick up the particles.
- Allow the area to ventilate well before re-entering.
- Discard the mercury by putting it in a double plastic bag and throw it away in the garbage.
